the royal library (the black diamond)

Assignment: Two stage curtains (3,7 x 36 m and 2,5 x 27 m)
Competition 1996
Builder: The State
Architects: Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen

The Royal Library is infinite. It is past, future, adventure, and treasury. The multifunctional hall is made for adventure.
The stage curtain fires expectations.

When designing stage curtains we want to make sure that they become part of the room and the building. The letters live in The Royal Library, and we want to work with letters as ornamental elements. We use them to create a composition that is infinite both because the pattern does not begin – or end – in any particular place and because the letters as symbols are not universal.

In our sketch presentation we use Hans Christian Andersen’s handwriting, original typewriter face and newspaper type of today. We see the type/writing as representing time – in various sizes.
